what is the GYROTONIC® method?

Although inspired by principles of dance, yoga, tai chi and swimming, the GYROTONIC® method offers a unique emphasis on connected spiral, circular and wave-like motion, without an end point, complemented by synchronized breathing techniques that enable deep muscular stretching and cultivate mind-body awareness. Created by founder Juliu Horvath in the 1970s, GYROTONIC® is designed to open energy pathways, stimulate the nervous system and increase range of motion. By replacing the kind of static, linear articulation that leads to repetitive wear and tear with continuous arcing movements, Juliu developed a system that actively promotes joint fluidity and renewal. Over the decades, GYROTONIC® has transformed the workouts – and well-being – of thousands of individuals worldwide.

how is it different from other forms of exercise?

At first, GYROTONIC® exercises may appear gentle and effortless, but the benefits are wide-ranging and deeply felt. Instead of holding and contracting the muscles, GYROTONIC® exercise helps to strengthen and stretch the body, enhancing its linearity and posture. With the assistance of handles and pulleys, you achieve multidimensional sweeping and arcing movements. Through a combination of balance and resistance the GYROTONIC® method allows the ligaments to relax and strengthen. While helping to make the body more fit, its focus on mobilizing the spine and joints can help ease physical problems and injuries, effectively minimizing pain and stiffness, reducing tension and eliminating physical restrictions.

about metamorphosis movement

Behind every great GYROTONIC® trainer is a modern lineage of expert mentorship heightened by a lifelong passion for movement. Katya Baker is a GYROTONIC® trainer based in Provincetown, MA. Katya grew up in Los Angeles, CA, where she studied ballet with the intention of becoming a professional dancer. Following an injury that sidelined her career ambitions, she studied International Relations and European Studies at Babes Bolyai University in Cluj Napoca, Romania.

 

She first embarked on her GYROTONIC® journey in 2009, after developing tendonitis in her hips. Katya first turned to Shevi Baruch at The Body Rhythm Studio in Santa Monica for cross-training and rehabilitation. From the moment she took her first class working with a GYROTONIC® tower, she felt an instant kinship with the practice. The arcing and spiraling paths of motion felt familiar, calming and based in natural movement patterns, and she was hooked.

 

In 2014 she took her first GYROTONIC® Pre-Training with Shevi. After studying abroad, she returned to the United States, where she completed her GYROTONIC® Level 1 Foundation in July 2020 with Claudia Tudose. She finished her Level 1 GYROTONIC® Certification in June 2022 and is currently in the process of becoming a GYROKINESIS® Level 1 Certified Trainer, a movement method focused on rhythmic flowing movement sequences without equipment, only a mat and chair. Always a big believer in having diverse training, Katya has had the honor to study with Cori Doetzer, Rosemary Carnes Mestler, Siobhan Roberts, Meghan Anne Jones and Juergen Bamberger.

 

Katya believes a healthy body equals a healthy mind, and that whether you’re a dancer, athlete, fitness enthusiast or perhaps inclined to more sedentary pursuits, the GYROTONIC® Method is endlessly customizable and completely transformative.
